About Me

Hi, My name is Sheryl Sazen and I am a passionate Jack Russell Dog Lover. I have had Jack Russell Terrier’s in my family for over 40 years. My current Jack Russell Terrier is a two year old named Shortie. He is the love of our lives. He provides us with many hours of laughs and enjoyment.  It has not been an easy journey training Shortie.  I hope to share with you some of the tricks I have learned over the years to help train these little dogs that are so full of energy and personality.

Hi Sheryl (that is exactly how my daughter’s mother-in-law spells her name!)
Kristen, my daughter, owns two JR. Petie is 4 1/2 and Tucker is only 1 1/2. Kristen is 3 months pregnant with twins…her first children. Last year both dogs were brutally attacked by a Rotweiller and a mixed Pit Bull. $10k later…the wounds are healed but Petie is suffering from flashbacks in his dreams and his temperament has changed. He has become a biter and shows aggression. Kristen and her husband have decided to have me train Petie out of his aggressive behavior. I have owned dogs all my life…big and small. My question to you is if it will be possible to effectively retrain this dog? Have you had any experience over the past 40 years with JRs learning never to bite? With two babies on the way the obvious question is does she ever trust the dog to be around the children? Petie is like a baby to Kristen and she is devastated. His first bite was chasing a young boy on a scooter…the skin was only scratched but the child was scared. Petie was quarantined for 10 days. On the 10th day he darted out of her car (at night) and went next door and bit a woman who was getting out of her car…this was a real bite…unprovoked. The woman is not telling the animal control…doesn’t want Petie to be killed. I would appreciate your expertise and look forward to your reply. I am sending this from my work. Please respond to the above email…I am concerned that if you send it to the work email it will end up in the spam file.
Thanks again, Sheryl. Wish me luck!

    Hi Alex,
What a lovely name for a Jack Russell! She sounds lovely.
In answer to your questions about training her… it is quite common for adolsecent dogs to forget their training.
This is where you will have to go back to the basics again and start training her again. She won’t have forgotten everything but will need constant correction to re-fresh her memory as to what is expected of her…
Her chewing Kleenex is a common problem.. This can be caused by boredom, however all dogs love tissue…
they are just so attracted to it and unless your dog is really obedient and will drop what is in her mouth for you. Its like what ice-cream is to us… (not good for us, but we still want it)

For more information on How to train Keisha you might want to check out this website http://www.howtotrainajackrussell.com. This book covers all your questions about how to stop your dog running away, how to train her to properly walk on a leash, stop her jumping, barking, begging etc.

Good luck with Keisha and have fun training your Jack Russell.
